Finding great staff when doing business in Thailand
One of the major headaches that any business has is finding the right employees and this can be even more of a problem when you’re doing business in Thailand — especially when you consider the language barriers and the difference in cultures. All too often, largely due to the aspect of Thai culture known as “saving face” many employees or potential employees will say that they can do tasks that are beyond them and should they get found out, leave without prior warning so it is therefore vital that you try and get the right team together from the outset to ensure your business in Thailand is a success.
There are a number of different places that you can advertise the position on offer, similar to that in many western countries such as adverts in the paper, adverts online, and adverts at job centres or by simply using an agency. The option that is best for you may depend on the position that you have available but it is probably wise to place the advert in a number of different media outlets to try and get as many people as possible to apply for the role, so that you have a larger pool of candidates to choose from.
Like most countries in the world it is always advisable to request a CV or resume. However, unlike other countries you can actually say specifically what you are interested in. For example: Attractive Thai female, 20-30 years old to work as a secretary in a busy office. By being so specific you will limit the number of CV’s that you receive but this may also mean that those who do apply are more suited to the job. Most CV’s will include a photograph.
Once you get to interview stage it is always advisable to meet potential employees on more than one occasion. Make sure that they turn up on time (a big problem in Thailand), their answers to questions are consistent with the previous meeting and where possible check up on references. There is no sure fire way to ensure that the person that you finally choose will be perfect for the role but by carrying out as many checks on the person as possible, you will certainly improve your chances. Most potential employees will have not problem with you checking their history if what they are telling you is the truth and they have no skeletons in the closet so perhaps alarm bells should ring if their appears to be undue resistance.
Above all, always remember that there are big cultural differences when you’re doing business in Thailand. If you respect their culture and their beliefs, the best Thai employees will remain loyal to you for a long time – something will obviously be beneficial to all parties concerned.
